Chapter 13

“So, where to, boss?”

Detective Rycroft did a double take at my use of the word boss. Then he cleared his throat, suppressing a smile. I grinned. I wasn’t sure why, but getting this man’s serious facade to crack was extremely satisfying.

“I’ve got a few people on my list to question today. We’ll start with the one I have the most questions for.”

He led me toward his car, which was parked just up the street. It looked perfectly normal, and I breathed a sigh of relief.

Sure beats a broomstick.

He held the door open for me, a surprisingly chivalrous gesture. Then he hopped into the driver’s seat and pressed his palm to the steering wheel. The engine roared to life.

Ah. Well, I guess the car has a few magical perks.

We drove in silence to The Raven’s Cauldron. I normally didn’t have a hard time making conversation with anyone, but something about the stoic, burly man made me a little tongue-tied. He smelled slightly of peppermint, and his scent filled the car, the pleasant aroma teasing my nostrils.

When we arrived at the shop, I hopped out and ran inside to speak to Claire. Her eyes practically bugged out of her head when she looked out the window and saw Detective Rycroft sitting in his car waiting for me.

“Do you have a date already? I’m so jealous! You just got into town. All the ladies here have been trying to snag Adam Rycroft ever since he moved here to take the detective job. But he’s never shown an interest in any of them.”

Adam.

It was a nice name. And it fit him. Strong and down to earth.

A blush painted my cheeks, but I pretended it didn’t. “No, silly! I wouldn’t leave you on your own here just so I could go on a date. This is business. I was doing some investigating, and Detective Rycroft agreed to let me help him.”

“You lucky duck!” Claire propped her chin on her hands, gazing out the window like a moony-eyed teenager. “He’s so dreamy!”

Could a person’s cheeks actually burst into flame? If so, mine were definitely close. “Yeah, I guess. If you’re into the strong, silent type.”

Which, now that I mentioned it, I sort of was.

“Of course I’ll watch the shop!” she declared. “I’ll try to find some easier potion recipes we can try tomorrow. Just text me if you need anything.”

“Thanks! You’re a life saver.”

She held out her hand for my phone and added her number to my contacts before swatting me lightly on the arm. “Now go! Don’t keep your date waiting! And I want all the details later.”

I rolled my eyes. “Sure thing, Claire. I’ll give you all the details of the case.” I emphasized the last few words, reminding her—and myself—that this was just a practical partnership.

When I slipped back into the waiting car outside, Detective Rycroft looked at me. “Everything all right?”

“Yes, just fine.” I hesitated, then added, “Honestly, the shop is probably in better hands with Claire than it would be with me.
